How to choose a Smith machine

Most models in this range are an all-in-one Smith machine: a guided Smith bar, a squat rack with J-hooks and spotter arms, and a cable system in one frame. For a Smith machine home gym, that means several stations in one footprint. The main differences are:

  • Cable resistance and ratio. The SP024 has a 40kg weight stack. The JL006 has 70kg on each side at a 2:1 cable ratio, so the load at the handle is about half the stack and the cable travels twice as far. The US586 has dual 100kg stacks, and the BL181 has 80kg per side at a true 1:1 ratio, so the handle load matches the stack.
  • Pulley range. More height positions give you more cable angles. The SP024 has 10 positions from 45cm to 180cm, the JL006 has 11 from 30cm to 180cm, the BL181 has 16 from 240mm to 1,571mm, and the US586 has 30 position markers on each side.
  • The bar. The US586 uses a 20kg Olympic Smith bar on copper bushings. The BL181 bar is counterbalanced, so its own weight is offset and you start close to zero resistance.
  • Frame and use. The SP024 and JL006 are built for home gyms and personal training studios, and the JL006 also suits light commercial spaces. The US586 is light commercial grade, with a 75×75mm, 3mm steel frame for private studios and light commercial facilities.

Smith machine FAQs

Is a Smith machine a good choice for a home gym?

It suits people who often train alone. The bar runs on a fixed track with safety hooks and stops, and most models add a squat rack and cables.

How much does a Smith machine bar weigh?

It depends on the model. The US586 bar is 20kg, while the BL181 bar is counterbalanced, so its weight is offset and you start from close to zero. Check each product page for the bar on that model.

Do I need a separate cable machine?

For most home users, no. The SP024 and JL006 include a lat pulldown bar and cable handles. If you want heavier cable work, compare the US586 (100kg per side) or the BL181 (1:1 ratio), or see our cable machines.

Can I see a Smith machine in person?

Yes. You can see and try selected models at our showrooms in Meadowbrook (Brisbane), Carrara (Gold Coast) and Northmead (Sydney). Please call ahead to check the model you want is on display.
