How to choose a power rack or squat rack

A power rack, also called a power cage, gives you a steel frame with J-hooks and safety (spotter) arms so you can squat, bench and press with a free barbell. Check what each rack includes: the DQ129 folding rack lists J-hooks and a pull-up bar.

  • Floor space. If space is tight, a folding squat rack such as the DQ129 mounts to the wall and folds flat when not in use. It is listed at 1350 x 630 x 2250 mm assembled.
  • Cables or no cables. A power rack with cables adds flyes, pulldowns and rows. The LY-90 combines a power rack with a cable crossover running 80kg weight stacks.
  • Frame and hardware. Check upright size and steel thickness. The DQ129 and LY-90 both use 75×75 mm, 3 mm thick steel. The LY-90 adds 8mm thick J-hooks and spotter arms and 10 pre-drilled holes for bolting to the floor.
  • Add-ons. The Adjustable Cable Trolley Arm fits 75 × 75 mm uprights with 25 mm hole spacing, including the US586 and LY-90, so you can add cable angles later.

Power rack FAQs

What is the difference between a power rack and a squat rack?

A power rack is a full cage with four uprights and safety arms inside. A squat rack is usually more open and compact.

Will a squat rack fit in my home gym?

Measure your ceiling and floor first, and leave headroom for pull-ups. The DQ129 is 2250 mm high and folds back against a wall, so it needs a solid wall to fix to; the LY-90 is 2380 mm high.

Can I use the DQ129 in a commercial gym?

The DQ129 is built for home and garage gyms and is not a commercial product. For studios and light commercial spaces, look at the LY-90, or ask about our gym fit-out service.

Can I see a power rack before I buy?

Yes. You can see and try selected models at our showrooms in Meadowbrook (Brisbane), Carrara (Gold Coast) and Northmead (Sydney). Please call ahead to check the model you want is on display.

Most setups also need an Olympic barbell, Olympic weight plates and an adjustable bench. Read Power rack vs Smith machine.
